A Short A Day – Somnolence
Somnolence

SomnolenceAn experiment to save the Earth from itself may end up destroying it in Somnolence.

Synopsis

Watch this in 1080p if you can. It’s worth it.

By 2031, the Earth has exhausted its supply of fossil fuels. With the world on the verge of collapse, nations from around the globe form a coalition called AREN; the ‘Manhattan Project’ of clean self-replenishing energy. When an experiment goes wrong that threatens the world’s existence, David Canterra and a team of elite soldiers are sent on a mission to stop the anomaly. What they find is a mind-bending alternate dimension, and their only way home is through the fabric of time.

Review

The synopsis tells you what it’s about, but Somnolence is something to be seen. Shot on a $10,000 budget over 2 days in Vancouver, British Columbia, this mini sci-fi epic rivals many feature-length studio projects.

Lighting, color, effects, sound, editing, and music blew me away. Shooting on a RED definitely upped the production value by a wide margin. The dialogue seemed a bit stiff at times in the delivery but it’s something that I’ll take as a special quirk of the film. I’m not going to lambaste them for somewhat stilted acting on a $10,000 budget.
