Free Games Are Good Part 7 – FloboPuyo

After a short break from the “Free Games Are Good” series, it’s time to go back.

For the better part of my life, Tetris has dominated my casual game playing.  But a few years ago I discovered Puyo Puyo, a really interesting spin on the falling-block puzzle subgenre.  Since then, I’ve been eschewing the traditional Russian line-breaker with this one.

FloboPuyo

This little bad boy comes to us from France.  And as far as clones go, you can’t do much better.  The rules are simple: connect four or more blobs that are of similar color to make them blow up. As you do so, your opponent can be punished with more falling clear blobs to block them from connecting their blobs.

You can play 1 or 2 players, but watch out for the hardest difficulty level.  It can really be a trickster.

The graphics are well done and the music and sound fit into the game’s “world” also.

Although there are a few small nits that bug me, mostly spelling and grammar errors, it’s a fun game to help you kill about 10-15 minutes.  I regularly play it when I’m taking a break from writing to help clear my mind.

FloboPuyo will run on Linux, OS X, and Windows.  Source code can also be downloaded and compiled as well.
