Okay, so we’ve only got about 5 days left of shooting, and I have a few minutes to post something.
Last night was the big burn stunts. Ron Balicki, our stunt coordinator, set himself on fire for the body burn. It was incredible to watch standing about 50 feet away. The adrenaline rush was immense even for the bystanders that saw it, including me.
Ron had some fairly tall flames on him, but he also ballooned out about 10 feet across with fire. He was around 1,200 degrees outside of the many layers of protection.
I’d like to thank everybody on the EMS team, the volunteer fire department, and the helicopter crew for being patient while we prepped him for the burn. Ron came out unscathed thanks to the stunt safety team and proper planning.
Then the pyrotechs set off the barn. It was awesome also. We had about 60ft. flames coming off the top of the 2-story barn. It burned quick, so we had only a few minutes to get our footage with the leads in the foreground before it got so hot we had to pull all of the camera and lighting back to a safe distance. Estimated temperature was around 3,000 degrees.
We had a second unit with another F900 running simultaneously with a different set of lenses to get the long shots while first unit handled the close-ups. After we pulled back we set up the second unit again and did pickups of the entire barn, framed in nicely by a full moon looking down on the whole scene.
