Synopsis

A young man accidently discovers that he can travel between two parallel worlds. He soon realizes that doing so has deadly consequences.

Review

I was stunned by how much was packed into this 7-1/2 minute short. Leap takes on some big production values for a short film and seems to pull them off. The sound was a tad bit off in the ADR for one part but it didn’t jar me out of the scene. The narration however was a bit thick at the beginning. While I can understand why (big story, small package), it could have been cut down a tad and the story would not have lost anything important.

It tried to tell a much bigger story in a shorter timeframe and because of that I think that’s where it ran into problems. You get the sense that this was only the tip of the iceberg for the protagonist. He’s jumping into a situation he barely knows anything about, and as a consequence so do we. The mystery of the situation does help to pull you along. At the conclusion, however, I found myself asking questions such as: What ultimately happened to him? Did he beat the raiders? Did he save the girl? What was really going on in that parallel world?

In the end, Leap is about conquering your own fears to do the things you thought were impossible to do. It’s where sci-fi shines best: teaching us something about ourselves in the here and now by going someplace else.
