Review

Finite Films does a good job of not only coming up with interesting stories to film but also weaves in the constraints placed on them by random Internet strangers without losing a beat. I’m sure there’s a lot of story meetings and banging of heads against walls somewhere in there, but what we see is a final product that continues to entertain.

The Kristy Corollary seems to be something that shouldn’t work at all and yet it does. It’s a story about a couple trying to work out their problems while the fabric of spacetime is coming unraveled. The warp and weft of things makes them jump all over the place

And yet there is a parallel here between the two plot threads: the collapse of the universe acting as a visual metaphor for the collapse of Mark and Kristy’s relationship. Just when you think it’s about to fall apart, a breakthrough happens and you don’t expect it to work out. Then again we’re not totally sure based on the ending, since the laws of physics are bent around and conspire to throw everything back to where we start off. It wasn’t frustrating to me (it was one of the constraints, after all) but it does lead to another point: in relationships our work is never done.

The thing I really took from The Kristy Corollary is this: never judge a book by its cover. Just because it looks nice doesn’t mean there’s something more substantial inside its pages. It could very well be the one book that saves the world from complete obliteration.
