Today I review a more recent film by F.C. Rabbath, Playing It Safe.
Synopsis
Rachael tries to come to terms with a dangerous and predatory world that leaves her in constant fear that affects her day-to-day activities. Her discovery of a mysterious pair of glasses is about to change all that.
Review
Normally I wouldn’t hit up the same filmmaker so soon. But F.C. Rabbath is an interesting cat. You can literally trace his growth as a writer, director, cinematographer, editor, and composer through his YouTube channel. This is one of his latest short films and it definitely shows a further growth and maturity.
And he doesn’t manage to lose his playfulness either with this story. The subject matter it deals with (sexual abuse) is a dark one. With the introduction of the glasses, and the uplifting musical score that goes with it, you can almost hear Rachael’s spirits lift up.
Suddenly she’s seeing the world in a whole new light, and not just a metaphorical one. This is shown in shots throughout the film of her dancing. At first she’s not really into it, but by the end (and with as happy an ending as you can get) she’s now smiling and much more fluid and easy in her movements.
Again, this was shot with zero budget but you wouldn’t know that looking at the long cast list and excellent post-production applied to it. The music, visual effects, sound, and acting all come together to make this an amazing film to watch.
