Continuing on with October’s theme of dark matter, here is the short horror film Love Hurts out of the Netherlands. Watch and read more after the break.
Synopsis
A young girl has a fight with her boyfriend in the women’s bathroom and forces him out. In the midst a breakdown, she finds she’s not alone.
Review
Love Hurts spins a quick visual tale that is complete, scary, and has a few nice bump-in-the-night boos to give us some jumps. The acting is very well done and the dialogue, while English spoken with Dutch accents, is clear and understandable, once you turn the volume up (more on that later).
The cinematography is brilliantly lit and shot. Movements are fluid and don’t take you out of the scene, even after a second or third viewing. Watch the opening credits to see what I’m talking about.
As you probably already know, sound is something I’m a stickler about. The sound in Love Hurts is good, except for the dialogue. The levels could have been brought up and not damaged it one bit. However, when it does come through it is crystal clear. Joram van Hartingsveldt did a great job capturing it on the set.
And this brings us to a very important lesson: copyright. There was a problem uploading this to YouTube because of the end credits song not passing copyright muster. So the end credits song had to be removed and left mute, although it could have been replaced with something that was kosher by copyright standards. Remember, when you’re working on your own original material, get permission/clearance for any existing source music or compose something new to avoid any potential legal issues.
