Tonight’s ScreenTalk ran a little long, but I didn’t mind. It was a great, information-packed show that was also a lot of fun. We had three great guests on, and when that happens we end up sometimes cramming for time, but the Internet radio gods smiled on us and let us run our course.
Harold Jackson talked to us about documentary filmmaking, its ins and outs and what he gets from it. Although I didn’t talk much at all through his interview, I was nonetheless fascinated by it. Documentaries are one genre which elude me as a writer, but you could definitely feel his own passion for the subject matter he presents in his own material. Check out Seemless and the upcoming Burn on DVD if you want to see his work.
Next up we had Chris Soth, who wrote Firestorm featuring Howie Long. His segment was more lighthearted, but it does show how a writer can get a spec script sold for big bucks. Of course this was during the mid-90s when studios were going on a buying rampage on specs. The market has since dried out considerably for that market.
And last, but not least, we had Marilyn Horowitz back on the show doing a little script doctoring. I’m glad we got her back on because, as I had said to my co-host Chris after her last appearance, I didn’t feel like we gave her enough time. This time it felt like we certainly had more. It was a lot of fun for me as a writer putting one of my scripts up on the lift, so to speak, and taking a look at where I needed to work on it a little more.
So, if you missed the show tonight, please feel free to stream it or download it from the archives on the ScreenTalk page.
