Although every game I’ve profiled so far has been open source, this one is not. However, it is available for free. That doesn’t make it any less of a fun game to play, and truthfully most people won’t care if the source code is available. With that said, I give you: Fate By Numbers.
Fate By Numbers started its life as a graduate project in the Netherlands. Using prosumer video technology and a little programming know-how, FBN showed it was possible to make an engaging and fun old-school adventure with full-motion video on a shoestring budget (about $2000 in U.S. currency, or 1500€.)
Although somewhat short, it’s still a lot of fun for those of us who crave that old-school adventure game. Coupled with the fact that it takes advantage of modern DVD technology and an immersive, film noir storyline and you’re bound to spend more than a few hours trouncing through the game world.
Unfortunately I can’t get any screenshots for it since the site is all in Flash, but you can go there for yourself and decide if its worth the download. You can download the ISO image for the DVD for your PC or grab it through the torrent link also on the site. A trailer is also available for viewing if you’re still hesitant about grabbing a
Fate By Numbers will run on Windows XP and Vista, according to the site. So for any Linux or Mac users out there, you’ll have to borrow a friend’s computer to try it out. It’s worth the effort.
