I read it, but couldn’t believe it. The so-called Author’s Guild has won against Amazon and the Kindle 2. Beyond the fact that their whole argument that reading text aloud is copyright infringement even if by a synthesized computer voice is asinine at best, I fear that this might be the slope getting slippery.
As with the music and movie industries before it, now the “publishing” world is jumping on the bandwagon and trying to control even more with outrageous claims. How long before books are shrinkwrap sealed with an End-User License Agreement buried somewhere inside that you agree to be merely opening the covering? It’s not as far-fetched as you might think.
It would have been nice to see Amazon fight the good fight on this one. Because it was (and is) a good fight, one that should have been nipped early in the courts.
