Book Editing Inches Closer to Finished

When I got up, I checked my e-mail.  In the inbox was a message from my editor with 2 last author notes for the book.  The first one was done in rapid succession and sent off.  The other took a little longer and was sent off about 30-45 minutes ago.

I’m practically sitting on pins and needles now, like a kid on Christmas Eve who can’t sleep.  Many things are going through my head, namely thoughts about whether or not I put everything in the book that I wanted to say.

What a lot of people don’t know is that your editor, if they are good at what they do, also have a tight timeline to complete a book’s edits before moving directly onto the next one.  They can be constantly busy, as was the case with my editor.  So my own short time window is rapidly closing in.  It’s this Sunday.  If I don’t get all of the edits completed, I’ll end up at the back of the queue, which means the book will be delayed.

So, when my editor replies, it’ll be either one of two things:

  1. This last bit you still need to work on, and we might need to bump you down to the bottom of the queue because we don’t have time now.
  2. It looks good.  I’ll incorporate the changes and send you the merged changes in a single document to look over the weekend and give me a response by Sunday.

Right now it’s a 50/50 toss-up between #1 and #2.  Real nail biting suspense.
