Okay, I’ll admit it: every so often, like a pregnant woman craving some strange pickle/ketchup combination, I just have to play a real-time strategy game. Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness was my first full-on experience with this, and it only served to give me an ephemeral wanting of the genre.
So about 3 weeks ago (when I should’ve been working on my book, I know) I found the Warzone 2100 Resurrection project. And all at once that craving crawled back into my frontal lobes and refused to leave until I had fed it a few levels.
The history behind the game development itself is another story worth mentioning. This game could’ve died an ignominious death at the hands of time stuck in the vaults of the game publisher after its shelf life had gone. But no, they decided to (eventually) license all game content and source code under the GPL and give it to the world. And then along comes the Resurrection Project to breathe even more life into it to this day.
Because of their efforts, this game can be enjoyed on Windows, Linux, and OS X. That is proof positive of the community spirit and tireless efforts of those that keep games like this alive and still relevant.
And I got my RTS fix, at least for another year or so.
